Earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University in 1976, Darla has been involved in the arts since that time. As an art educator she taught grades 6-8 in Houston, TX for 5 years and operated a stained glass business. As a public school volunteer she coordinated art programs in Seabrook, TX as well as Talking Canvasse in Des Moines, IA and the Cultural Arts program in Denton, TX. Darla has taught private classes in several medias but now concentrates on watercolor and drawing instruction. In her personal work she finds the greatest challenge and satisfaction in watercolors and photography. Love of travel is evidenced primarily in her photographic images while her appreciation for nature is reflected in watercolors.
Her art work has appeared in several juried shows, solo exhibitions, publications and web pages. Darla’s skill as a faux painter is displayed in many residential and business places in the Houston, Des Moines, Dallas and Denton areas.
COMING IN OCTOBER 2008
Darla is offering a workshop...and you are invited to attend! In the later part of October 2008 when the fall colors are at their peak, a small group of artisans will gather at Ghost Ranch in Santa Fe, NM to share a creative experience unlike any other! Set in the retreat atmosphere of Ghost Ranch, we will explore several medias together. Focusing on how to capture the images and impressions of an area and then translating those to original, unique pieces of art is the goal of this workshop.
Using cameras and journals, we will use different methods to capture impressions and images, return to Ghost Ranch and then transfer those images into individual, creative pieces of art. This retreat/workshop combines the medias of photography, watercolor and pencil/pastel drawing—experiencing and stretching the potentials of each.
This workshop promises to provide a very unique, fun learning experience as we look at new ways to interpret an image. Santa Fe will more than provide subject matter for our work with its rich history, landscape, architecture, and people,. Demonstrations by Darla in regards to all these medias, slide presentations, even door prizes will keep things lively and interesting. We will capture the magic of the southwest with our cameras and journals, journey into the fields of drawing and painting and culminate with a combination of all media.
