Fran White Shurtleff

I owe a great deal to a third grade teacher in Wichita Falls, Texas, who, by providing art opportunities, gave a shy little girl an outlet for her imagination.  At the age of nine, I discovered the joy of drawing, of being able to create a world of my own.  Ever since then, that act of creating has been an essential part of my life.  I work in a very detailed and realistic style and paint subjects I see in my everyday life. Many of my subjects are parts of old buildings or machinery.  I love the wonderful textures and subtle color variations I see on their surfaces.

I have been active in art organizations and competitions throughout my career and have instructed adults and young people through private lessons and public schools.  I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Arlington and also studied at Midwestern University, the University of Washington in Seattle, and Navarro Junior College.  I have attended numerous workshops taught by noted artists.  In 1992, I achieved signature status in the Southwestern Watercolor Society.  My work can be found in collections in several states.  Two of my paintings appear in the book on watercolor entitled Splash Six, the Magic of Texture.
