Mary Sigle Morris

     statement

Having spent all of her early years in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, Mary Sigle Morris came to Denton in 1962 to study art at Texas Woman’s University. Upon graduation Mary was the first interior decorator for Thomas Furniture Ethan Allen Gallery in Denton, having married Bobby Glen Morris of Denton while still at university.

Mary began painting in watercolor during a University of North Texas mini course taught by Jo Williams in 1990. The time and the medium were right to spark an interest in art that had lain dormant while raising a family. She continues to take occasional classes from Williams as well as attending workshops in the Denton/Dallas area. Travel to other parts of Texas as well as England and Mexico on painting trips has expanded her range of subjects. Mary has been accepted into local and regional juried exhibitions and has won several awards.

"It gives me great pleasure to be able to paint certain things which catch my eye, things which are special to me or someone close to me. Man made things - the interiors of homes or shops, objects left for a moment or for ever; and God made things - groves of trees, fields or grassland prairie, leaves with their sun cast shadows; these hold a quiet fascination. The interaction of the manmade with the natural, particularly where light and shadow play a part, are part of the intrigue. God’s hand touching a part of our lives is an integral part of my life and my paintings."
