VAST awards prizes to exhibition winners

The Visual Arts Society of Texas gave $11,124 worth of cash and prizes to the winners of its 36th Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition, which opened last Sunday.

Marlys Lamar won Best of Show with her oil on wood, "Not Knowing When the Dawn Will Come, I Open Every Door." The best of show award, the Greater Denton Arts Council award, is a $1,000 cash prize.

The exhibit will run through May 27 in the Meadows Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. in Denton. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

More than 400 slides were submitted to the contest, and 60 artists were selected.

The remaining award winners were:

* Dan Lattimore, "Carmen," pencil, $110 Canson Inc.: Arches-Rembrant Award.

* Nancey Donley, "American Tradition," watercolor, $109 C2F Award.

* Diane Walker-Gladney, "Road Art Series — Green, Copper, Blue," mixed media, $500 Visual Arts Society of Texas Award & $300 Jack Richeson Award.

* Devon P. Wattier, "G.M. Nowlin, Upright Citizen," oil on fabric, $500 Voertman’s Award & $275 Ampersand Art Supply Award.

* Magdalena Weinkein, "Anatomy of Flowers Series: Heart Flower," watercolor, $350 WheelerPress Award & $365 Faber-Castell Award.

* Anila Quayyum Agha "Dagh," embroidery on paper, $200 TexasBank Award I & $200 Chartpak Award.

* John A. Calabrese, "Never Let Me Go," graphite pencil on paper, $200 TexasBank Award II & $200 Grumbacher Award.
