NAMES IN THE ARTS

A University of North Texas faculty member and student will take part in the Texas Conservatory for Young Artists 15th Season.

Harold Heiberg, an internationally acclaimed vocal coach and accompanist who teaches in the UNT College of Music, is one of many teachers who will teach at the conservatory, which will be June 20-27 at the John Anthony Theatre of Collin County Community College. Heiberg will be an instructor in the conservatory’s teachers’ classes.

Admission to Sunday and evening recitals is $15 for adults and S10 for seniors and students. A pass for Sunday, evening and noon, recitals is $38 for adults and $25 for seniors and students. Tickets to the noon recitals are $5.

The conservatory is a nonprofit organization co-directed by Sam Wong and David Grice dedicated to developing talented young pianists. Since 1989, the conservatory has staged its annual events the third week of June. For more information, visit www.tcya.org.

The Denton Community Chorus, under the direction of Mark Baker, will perform Beethoven’s Mass in C at Carnegie Hall 8 p.m. Thursday in New York City. The chorus is made up of nonprofessional singers. The group will perform with the ISO Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

The chorus performed the same piece with the Texas Festival Chorus at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Muenster earlier this month. The Texas Festival Chorus is made up of performers from eight other community choruses around the state.

Polly Maynard recently received the Childbloom Guitar Program’s Outstanding Program Award.

Maynard has directed the Denton Childbloom Guitar Program, a guitar instruction program for children ages 5 to 12 that uses group lessons to teach children how to play the instrument quickly, since 1986.

“The Denton Childbloom program is without peer in the nation,” said Kevin Taylor, the president of the Austin-based Childbloom Co. “The students are superlative and the program has been incredibly consistent in its educational productivity. This could not happen without Polly’s dedication to the children and responsiveness to the parents in the program.”

Maynard is the only master teacher in the program. She has recorded an album and is a frequent performer in the Dallas--Fort Worth area.

Painter Beverly Sipos was named Artist of the Year by the Denton-based Visual Arts Society of Texas for 2004. Sipos is an award-winning figure painter. The painting that earned her the Artist of the Year accolade is an oil on canvas portrait titled Sharon.

Society members bring a completed work to each monthly meeting during its nine-month calendar. At the end of the year, the society chooses Artist of the Year from those named top artists at each monthly meeting. Sipos won the top award in November with another work, Juli.
