Sketchbook Journaling Workshop

Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at Patterson-Appleton Arts Center in Denton, Texas

VAST member,  Dalynn Montgomery will inspire attendees to keep an artful sketchbook journal. 

Suggested Supplies: Watercolor Sketchbook, permanent black fine tip pen, small watercolor palette, brushes, paper towels, water container.  (Bring what you love to use!)

Topics Covered:

*Choosing a subject  and a composition for your sketch

*What’s perspective got to do with it?

*Time Management- it’s not the Mona Lisa, plan accordingly and move on

*Where to Sketch - (hint: almost anywhere)

*What to do about mistakes: Shut down that negative talk! “Mistakes make your sketch charming!” -Dalynn


Plan to bring a few of your favorite photos to sketch. Weather permitting, we may walk outside to sketch on location, outdoors for an hour or so. You may elect to stay indoors during this time if preferred.

Critical Foundations for Watercolor Portrait

The focus of this workshop is on the fundamentals of watercolor portraiture, including human anatomy, forms, and lighting. Participants will practice addressing these elements loosely and efficiently with watercolor.



Born in China, Stephen graduated from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts and received his MFA from the University of North Texas. He is currently an assistant professor in Communication Design at UNT. Stephen’s artwork has received widespread recognition both nationally and internationally, winning awards from prestigious exhibitions organized by the American Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America USA, American Illustration and the Chinese National Art Exhibition, among others.

He has won 3 best of Show in 5 years at Watercolor USA. His work has been featured in publications such as Watercolor Artist, American Art Collector, Art Connoisseur and International Artist. This is the first of a series of watercolor portrait workshops to be taught by Stephen, each dealing with an important aspect of the art.

Cancellation / Refund Policy for Workshops


The cancelling member shall contact the Workshop Coordinator as soon as possible to facilitate replacement. The VAST wait list has first priority over other students who are not on the wait list.


Upon a student’s cancellation of a workshop at least one month prior to the start date of the workshop, the workshop fee is 100% refundable.


Upon a student’s cancellation of a workshop less than one month prior to the start date of the workshop, the entire fee is refundable only if the space is filled and paid for. If the space is not filled and paid for, the workshop fees are refundable, less the $100 deposit.


Once the workshop begins, there are no refunds for no-shows or withdrawals.


VAST reserves the right to cancel workshops due to insufficient enrollment or other reasons. If VAST cancels a workshop, applicants will receive a full refund.
